“For this project we have produced an artefact in the form of a plan for an app in which users can virtually manage Longshaw Estate. In the game users take the role of a Longshaw park ranger and can make decisions about how many visitors are allowed access to the estate and what activities they are permitted to do. They will then have to deal with the issues this raises in terms of conservation of the estate, and will have to make decisions about the balance of access and conservation.
With our artefact we are addressing the issues of conservation versus access to the Longshaw Estate. The central message of our artefact is the issue of conservation of Longshaw and the impact that public access has on this. We are trying to target a younger audience and encourage them to engage with both the estate itself and the issues of conservation that it faces. This is why we chose the format of an app, as this is something interactive that the younger generation can easily engage with and will enjoy, whilst learning about conservation issues.”
