“During our initial group discussion for the project we realised how closely related we are to the animals we deem so apart from us. This realisation challenged our perceptions and we began to think about other similarities between ‘animal’ and ‘human’. We decided that speech and language make us unique as a species. However, considering that animals are unable to communicate through words, they are not necessarily ‘voiceless’ and incapable. From this we tried to imagine the world from the perspective of an animal, and thus evolved our idea for the artefact.
The central message we wanted to convey with this is the idea that we are never able to truly understand a world outside of our own human existence. When trying to relate and understand the animal world, we can only do this from our own preconceived humanised perspectives. In our artefact video we decided to purposely personify the polar bear, presenting it in a human situation. This highlighted the separation between the human/animal worlds in its attempt to merge them together.”
